Can you start a 12 lead motor across the line, for a fire pump. I have a patterson fire pump controller for my fire pump which is rated 250hp and is protected by a 2000A disc switch. My practice has always been to connect the motor per the connection diagram on the motor nameplate. There is no diagram on this motor nameplate for across the line connection.

Can I still connect it across the line?

RE: Fire pump motor 250hp

You have to use a UL-listed fire pump controller compatible with the motor.  This equipment is generally provided as a package by the fire pump supplier.  I would not change anything without checking the fire pump supplier.

Is this a new pump just being installed or are you wanting to modify an existing installation?

yeah it is a new pump being installed and the controller is UL listed.  Thanks for the response.

The motor could be a dual voltage, star delta start motor.
Twelve lead generators are common, twelve lead motors are rare.

If this motor is fed by a utility distribution system, you need to check and see if their system can handle the starting of this size motor. Many utilities can not start a motor this large and will require a starter.
