How do i remove the spring stone from a rib vault. I have thought of centering support but as soon as i remove the spring stone the stone above will fall. Any ideas.

RE: supporting a rib vault

The only thing that comes to mind is to use rock bolts to hold the first several stones, above the spring stone, to the centering.

Thanks for that I will try and get it pass the conservation officer

RE: supporting a rib vault

Last time I checked you cannot lift yourself by pulling from your own hair.

Tying the stone blocks above the spring stone will secure them to the rest of the arch, but if the arch has no support because the spring stone is gone, the whole thing will collapse al the same.

I have very nominal knowledge of masonry, but I would not think a central support will do. I would think you would need to provide full suport along the arch/vault.

RE: supporting a rib vault

The centering would support the whole arch, it is like formwork for masonry, that is how arches are built in the first place, on either side, right up to the keystone in the center.

My bad! That makes sense now. I did not know they were called that.

RE: supporting a rib vault

Not that bad, in the UK, at one time, centering was used to mean formwork as well.

How about a left-field suggestion. I take it you want to remove and replace the cracked stone?

Precast concrete bridge fabricators repair cracks by injecting epoxy adhesive under pressure. You might ber able to repair it in place. If it works for beams carrying 80,000 lb trucks, it might work for a building.
