I've used COSMOS/M for ages, and am currently trying to develop a 3D model which consists of perfectly bonded BEAMD3D and SHELL4 elements.  I would like to plot maximum fiber stress in the beams, etc. but I can't figure out how to do so.  Any tips?  The manual has been useless, which probably means I'm just not looking in the right place.

Also, it would be helpful if I could add new parts to the model without forcing mesh continuity at the joints.  I know COSMOS/M is allegedly capable of handling this, but again, I'm not finding it in the manual.  Any help on either of these problems would be greatly appreciated!

To plot the stress I think this is doable in the plot menus. If not you can to an xy plot of those quantities. It is a bit of work to setup.

Adding parts? As in geometry or a mesh? Why not read in a geo file with the part in it?

Thanks for your reply.  Let me clarify:

1.  I don't see any way to set up stress plots for beams.  If you select "ELE" in the plot menus, it lets you select from the standard stress variables (von Mises, P1, Sx, etc.), but those really aren't all that helpful.  I have figured out how to graphically depict and list shear and bending moments, so I can probably find the worst spots the old-fashioned way.

2.  I'm referring to discontinous meshing, where (for instance) I want to add a curve to my model such that it intersects a previously-meshed curve and no nodes exist at the intersection point.  I need COSMOS to recognize that the two parts are bonded and enforce displacement compatability across that bond, even though the two parts do not share a common node.

#2 is easy so I'll get that out of the way first. You want to use the CPDOF command. That will enforce displacements between nodes. You have to issue one command for each dof be tied together.

#1 you can plot beam diagrams
you can list stresses in beams based on the information you used in your RCONST statement regarding section modulus and distance to the extreme fiber.
You can plot that information by using the PLOT_XY command and pick out a line of nodes.

I'm just shooting off the top of my head. If I get a chance I'll sit down at the computer and actually look up the commands I used to use.
