HySys Vs Aspen Plus?

HySys Vs Aspen Plus?

HySys Vs Aspen Plus?

(OP)
What is the difference between HySys and Aspen Plus? I have used Aspen Plus for about 8-9 years now, and am currently doing research at a University where HySys has been used to a large degree in undergrad courses. Thus I get this question quite often but I fail to find any major differences... Does anyone have experience of both these programs and any examples of when one is preferred over the other, or when one is not applicable at all?

Regards
Rickard

RE: HySys Vs Aspen Plus?

Based on my experience, HYSYS is the most user-friendly process simulator. But again, it depends on how much time one has spent working with any software. After going through Pro/II, ChemCAD, Hysys, Aspen Plus - I stick to HYSYS for years.

My question is more related to the capacity of the softwares in different fields, not how user friendly they are (I find Aspen Plus more easy to use, since I have been using it for quite some time... ). Since both programs are owned by AspenTech I assume there must be a difference, otherwise one would be dismissed.. Or? Anyone who has any knowledge of this?

RE: HySys Vs Aspen Plus?

its all about marketting and market share, not capabilities.  Dilbert or Apple exemplifies the whole software market.

RE: HySys Vs Aspen Plus?

The HYSYS user interface is horrid, based on my experience with other simulators.  What dcasto said is true.  AspenTech has a very large market share, despite the fact that (in the case of HYSYS, in my opinion) is very user unfriendly.

I've used Aspen Plus very little.  It "looks" nicer, but that's about it.  I think they both use the same thermo; version 7.1 of Aspen's suite of tools allows HYSYS to start using the property packages from Aspen Plus.  So as far as accuracy goes, you're *probably* going to get the same answers out of both programs.  Aspen Plus has solids handling capabilities in it, I believe, and it has an "automatic recycle" capability whereas in HYSYS you have to add them manually.  Some folks like that, some folks don't.

What I've seen is folks get used to one simulator, and because of familiarity, that's what they stick with, even if someone shows up with a "better" product, that's cheaper, faster, w/e.  It's not so much cost, as it is "this is what we're used to".

Just my two cents.  :)

Onwards,

Matt

RE: HySys Vs Aspen Plus?

Aspen Plus evolved as a chemical process simulator - it is very strong for simulating non-ideal properties, systems with electrolytes, solids, azeotropes, and chemical reactions. It is also strong for modeling large-scale flowsheets (using the equation-orieted approach).

HYSYS is optimized for upstream oil & gas, gas processing, and refining applications. It has a good workflow centered around 'forward-backward' solving.
