Why does this function not allow the selection of a face (master model) when Associative is toggled on ?

I see what you are saying, but a solution may be to mate the solid body (in the drawing file) to fixed planes (if I understand your problem correctly).
I haven't worked with the new "mating conditions" yet in NX6 but I assume that you can still do that.

This capability has been enhanced in NX 7.5 so as to work in Master Model Mode just as it does now in non-Master Model Mode.  You do have to be careful though to make sure that when you select the orientation references that both the 'Associative' option is toggled ON and that the 'Selection Scope' is set to Entire Assembly.
