"open file dialogue box" is maximized-HATE IT-can I get rid of it

When I go to open a drawing, I hit the "open file" button which brings me to the open file dialogue box, but it maximizes this box, taking up the whole monitor screen.  even if sw is in restore mode, and not maximized.  please help me make it normal again

SW should remember the box size between sessions. Whatever the size was when you last closed SW ... and crashing doesn't count ... should be remembered.

Cor, I think you may have missed my point.  I'm not concerned with sw being maximised, the Open file dialogue box is what's driving me nutty.  I cant make it smaller at all, it s always maximized.

Bottom right hand corner of the box can be dragged to size the window. Just mouse over the corner until your pointer becomes a two way arrow and resize to fit your needs.

I was referring to the Open dialogue box.

If you can't get to a corner of the box, try changing the screen resolution to a higher setting.

If that doesn't work, try resetting the SolidWorks registry.

Alt+Space+M for win move , then use arrow keys and enter to place dialog so you can re-size it. Or open up the parts by using Drag+Drop.

Maximization in Windows has always pissed me off. It's a lot harder to work in multiple windows if each is maximized.

Similar to mjcole's suggestion, just grab the top (blue) bar of the box, move it to expose a corner, re-size it to your liking, and then close and re-start SW. The box size should be remembered.

You guys are all making great suggestions, but none of them are working.  This darn box just doesnt wanna be small.  I put my cursor in the low right corner, and it switches to the double diagonal arrow, for dragging box size, but it wont get smaller.  the alt spc move wouldnt move it.  The blue bar is available at the top, at the left end of it it has the sw logo, and OPEN, and the right end of it has the x box.  I grab the blue box, but it is stuck in place, and maximized.  I've tried all screen resolutions avalable to me.  I'm currently maxed at 1680 x 1050.

The only thing I havent tried is corblimey's suggestion of resetting the registry.  Can you give me a little more insight on that trick?

Close SolidWorks.
Go to Start > Run > type regedit > OK > HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software ... rename SolidWorks (any name will do), and then close the registry.

NOTE:  Restarting SW will rebuild the registry key to a newly installed state, so all customization will be lost. If this works, customise SW to your liking and make sure to save (export) the SolidWorks registry setting for next time something goes awry.

The renamed SolidWorks registry key can be deleted once SW is running smooth again.

Problem's been solved.  "just double click the blue bar,  and the annoyance is history!"
