Internal vs External part views in drawing files.

Internal vs External part views in drawing files.

Internal vs External part views in drawing files.

In NX 6 I am looking at a drawing file where all the views are imported (part is not a component of the drawing file assembly).  Is there away to convert the external views to internal views by bringing the components into the assembly tree of the drawing file without disrupting the views and their annotations on the drafting sheets?  I need to make some drawing specific changes which require use of the modeling application inside the drawing file.  As the imported views are new to me (ANT shows part icon with drawing sheet behind it, but component does not show up in graphics window in modeling app) what pros and cons have you experienced creating a drawing this way as opposed to the traditional way of having the parts as components in the ANT of the drawing file?

RE: Internal vs External part views in drawing files.

I'm still not sure what you mean by an 'imported view', imported from WHERE?  Or even what you mean by 'external' versus 'internal' views, again, where have you heard or read of these terms?

I guess I made the terms up, let me define them:

Imported view = external = When placing a base view (Base view dialog open), you open another part that is not in your drawing assembly. (ANT shows icon of part with drawing sheet behind it)  Importated may have been a bad choice to describe since the view under the drawing sheet in the part navigator says Imported "ViewName@#" regardless if the part is external to the drawing assembly or a direct component to it.

internal = a view of the component(s) that are in the current drawing assembly.

See attachment for clarification

OK, now I understand.

As for some solution to your dilemma, I doubt if there's anything that would take less time and effort than just simply starting over.

I figured that would be the case.  We have not ran into any shortcomings yet, I was just trying to look ahead to see what rakes we might step on by using the external views.

RE: Internal vs External part views in drawing files.

The so-called 'External' views are there to allow you to show, primarily as a sort of reference view, geometry from part files other than the Master Model file referenced by the Drawing.  If you keep that in mind as you use this optional scheme, you shouldn't have any problems.
