Can anyone refer me to what codes refer to the design (wall thickness in paticular) of a pressurized rectangular box. I have been told that Section 8 div 1 deels only with cylindrical or spherical vessels.

RE: pressure vessel boxes

See Appendix 13 of the Section VIII, Div.1 code. It deals with vessels with noncircular cross sections.

i do not have any asme material (and would prefer not to spend $600+) does anyone know if this appendix would help in designing a pressurized rectangular box?

Also since i prefer not to spend the money can anyone refer me to an alternate way of calculating what i need? i have found plenty of stuff in calculating cylindrical object but nothing for thickness of a box.

RE: pressure vessel boxes

mielke, try a site search, this subject has been discussed before, I seem to remember a paper on the topic.

However, before constructing any sort of pressure vessel, you should determine if a Coded vessel is required for liability, contractural or other reasons.

Mike

RE: pressure vessel boxes

We use appendix 13 to design heat exchangers, spefically the rectangular steelwork around a graphite block.
As far as we are aware it is the only code that covers rectangular vessels.
