Detail callouts

(OP)
There's a lot of dissention in my office as to how details should be called out.  The only guide I've seen in ASME is the illustration shown on the left of the attached file.  Usually we do it as shown on the right.  We're constantly changing the line type (phantom, hidden), thickness, font size, etc., depending on the program lead.  How should it be done?   -jim-

RE: Detail callouts

ASME Y14.3-2003 says very little about detail views at section 2.9 and the example is as you show.

Section 2.9 references 1.7.2 & 1.7.7 but I don't think they answer your question either.

I do them more like your right hand view, I'm not sure our CAD does the left hand 'asme sample' version.

How about coming up with a company standard for this, just to avoid re-hashing it time & again?

RE: Detail callouts

I agree with KENAT; this should be spelled out in the company DRM if it is an issue, as it seems more a question of company "style" than actual adherence to the standards.  I also use the right hand example, though our CAD will do either.

RE: Detail callouts

I have used both to the examples. Also I have used a spline the shape of the view outline, an elipse and in some cases here a dot in the area of the view. It is a matter of preference and not an industry standard as has been said. I agree that if you want to control what is used you should add that to your company DRM (or just to the defalts of the CAD system). I would however make it a preference not a requirement. For my preference, I would not use the dot method stated above, but it is common practice with our client.
