ASME VIII, Div 1, Appendix 7

ASME VIII, Div 1, Appendix 7

ASME VIII, Div 1, Appendix 7

(OP)
All,

I hope you can help me out with some wording here.  Specifically, Appendix 7 7-3 (a)(1), and 7-3 (b)(2).

(a)(1) states, All critical sections shall be radiographed.  To me, that's clear, cut, and dry.

(b)(2) states, ...shall be subjected to radiographic examination...  I'm struggling with "subjected to".

Can someone enlighten me as to what the difference is between the two?  Or is this just semantics, same thing just worded differently?

My thoughts are that "subjected to" could mean that the code realizes it may be impossible to fully radiograph a large or thick casting, and that perhaps the manufacturer and end user should agree to the areas requiring radiography.  Or that it may mean where accessible, where possible, or where practical.

Thanks in advance.

RE: ASME VIII, Div 1, Appendix 7

The key word is "shall".  That means it is required.  If it said "may be" or "should,", then it is optional.  "Subjected to" is just the same thing with different wording.

I don't disagree with that.

But, why not use the same verbiage for consistency's sake?

RE: ASME VIII, Div 1, Appendix 7

I think it is semantics.  These rules are written by committees an different people may have worded the same requirement differently to say the same thing.

In either case, the part in question gets x-rayed.

Thanks guys.  I've spoken with several others about this, and all have came to the same conclusion as here.
