When to Modify Tank

When to Modify Tank

When to Modify Tank

(OP)
If an 80 foot diameter tank has been in service for thirty years and the manway does not have a repad, do we have to install a repad? Have had no service issues with the manway and the service history has proven that we should not modify the tank.

RE: When to Modify Tank

Are there any records at all regarding the tank installer ?

Any tank drawings retained by the regulators ?

Or, as most owners typically do, has everything been discarded ?

No information is available.

RE: When to Modify Tank

Generally, manway openings will need to be be reinforced.  That reinforcement may consist of a repad, a thickened neck, excess shell plate thickness or any combination of the three.  If a repad is not present, it could be an oversight or could be intentionally designed that way.  An inspection of the tank and manway construction with some calculations should tell the difference.

RE: When to Modify Tank

flat....

Who brought the issue up ?

Is this topic idle speculation or a request by a regulator ?

Where is the tank located ?

With no records, how do you know everything has been OK for 30 years ?
