GMAW / FCAW

OK gentlemen and welders :) I am being told that under ASME sec IX if a welder Certifies under GMAW he is automatically qualified for FCAW using the same WPS I can't find anything under section IX that leads me to believe this. If you have an answer could you please reference code and sec.

RE: GMAW / FCAW

Interpretation Number: IX-86-46
Codebook: Section IX
Volume: 20
Date: 24-NOV-86
Subject: Section IX, QW-355
Question: Is a welder who is qualified using gas metal-arc welding (GMAW) also qualified for flux-cored arc welding (FCAW) or vice versa, provided the other variables for performance qualification remain unchanged?

Reply: Yes.

RE: GMAW / FCAW

According to AWS D1.1, the welding process is an "Essential Variable".  Therefore welder re-qualification is required.

ref.  D1.1 p152

RE: GMAW / FCAW

Connectegr,
You would be correct if the question was about AWS D1.1.
