I have a vessel in cold service (SA-240 Gr316L) and am wondering what structural stainless steel is commonly used for supports?

RE: stainless structural steel for vessels

SA276 Grade 316 or 316L ?

RE: stainless structural steel for vessels

We generally use 304/304L for externals, even on 316 vessel

would you use SA-276 or SA-240?

RE: stainless structural steel for vessels

SA240 is a standard applicable to plate whereas SA276 is a standard applicable to bars and structural shapes.

You could use SA240 to order plate to fabricate structural members but if you wanted to order structural shapes (angle iron, channels, etc.) SA276 would be the appropriate standard.

RE: stainless structural steel for vessels

if what we need is not available in structural shapes .... we will fabricate from plate sa-240
