huge element distortion even with ALE adaptive meshing

huge element distortion even with ALE adaptive meshing

Hi Abaqus gurus,

I am working on a simple 2D simulation with two circles.  The inner circle is inflated with a constant pressure (3000pa). The material is a simple linear elastic model (E=2000, poisson=0.45).  Even I have used ALE adaptive meshing to control mesh distortion, the final result I obtained is still distorted heavily.  Can someone enlighten me on what may be wrong?  I have attached the CAE file.

Appreciated!

Are you expecting large deformation?  It might be worth double checking your units.  Is the outside diameter 200 meters?  Also, to reduce solve time utilize the XZ symmetry plane.  I hope this helps.

Also your E value is defined as MPa however your pressure hs been defined as Pa, I am not sure you can do this.

Hi Rob and OptiEng,
Thanks for replying.  Suppose in this simulation, only standard units are used.  The size is 200m, and E is 2000pa and the pressure is 3000 pa.  I did not use MPa for E.  My sole purpose is to test ALE. Even though Abaqus completed the analysis, I still see distortion in the result.  I can't figure out why.  I have attached the inp file generated with the cae file.  Please give it a check.

Thank you very much!

RE: huge element distortion even with ALE adaptive meshing

Sorry Jay, my mistake.  I will have a look at your file to see if I can help anymore.  If so I will post again.

RE: huge element distortion even with ALE adaptive meshing

Jay-

If you're just checking the program, then you should have a hand calc that you are checking against. What does the hand calculation say the deflection will be? What material is it which you are modeling? I'm used to playing with steel and your Young's modulus is orders and orders of magnitude off from what I'm used to.

RE: huge element distortion even with ALE adaptive meshing

Jay, your applied pressure is one and a half times the Young's Modulus you have specified, in a simple linear uniaxial system that gives a strain of 1.5

Do you have any understanding of what this actually means (in a real world)?

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply!  The distortion still occurs if I change the pressure load to like 1000, which is half of Young's modulus.  Thanks for reminding me that such a deformation is unrealistic which I overlooked.  I am new to this kind of stuff.

Hope to get more help from you!

Jay
