Allowable Loads/Moments on Tee Joint

Allowable Loads/Moments on Tee Joint

Allowable Loads/Moments on Tee Joint

(OP)
Hi :

For use in a 16in pressure vessel, I am trying to calculate the allowable nozzle loads on a 16in Tee.

Can someone tell me how do I calculate the allowable loads per ASME pressure vessel code ?

Thanks

Kapil,Cincinnati

RE: Allowable Loads/Moments on Tee Joint

There's an infinite number of nozzle force/moment combinations.  For a given set of loads, you can verify the stresses using the methods that have been given to you in your previous posts.

RE: Allowable Loads/Moments on Tee Joint

LOL. Have you taken direct measurements of the geometry of the tee which will be used? At least a tee from the same manufacturer? Tee geometries (diameters, crotch radius, thickness) are not specified by B16.9 except at the weld ends where they need to be uniform (locations of welds) and match the thickness of the adjoining pipe.

So... whacha gonna model? Maybe take a piping design approach using SIF's etc. But an FEA without measured dimensions might be meaningless.

You are right, I do not have complete geometry information about the tee joint.

Till now what I have done is modelled two intersecting cylinder of 16in. diameter at right angles to each other.

This result in a sort of singularity at the intersection. I do not know how to remove this singularity.

How do I use Piping design approach on tee joint?

I m really struck on this calculation and management is not too happy with that.

RE: Allowable Loads/Moments on Tee Joint

Get new management? Get a mentor? If you've been hired to do what you haven't been educated / trained to do then it is not your fault. Not that management wants to hear it, but its the truth. If you told 'em you could and you can't, well, that's another issue.
