Raft Foundation Design

Raft Foundation Design

Raft Foundation Design

(OP)
Hello

Can anyone tell me how I go about design of a raft foundation for a 2 storey dwelling house. The walls are concrete blocks 2 leafs. The roof is a timber cut roof. Is there a software available for this design or maybe someone may have an example they could share.

Thanks to all!

RE: Raft Foundation Design

How much structural engineering experience do you have?  It is a little hard to explain briefly.

Basically, the soil under the raft is modeled as springs, with the raft modeled as a concrete plate.  You need a finite element program to analyze this.

If the soil is reactive, you will also need to account for shrinkage and swelling of the soil, normally there is good  guidance in your local residential footings design code.

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in mud. After a while you realize that they like it

Thanks all
Would anyone have a worked example available that I could follow

RE: Raft Foundation Design

If you have "Principles of Foundation Engineering" 5th Edition by Braja Das

There is an example on p 281 - 289. that is quite good.
