Fillet Weld Termination

Fillet Weld Termination

Fillet Weld Termination

(OP)
I have been dealing with the issue of how a fillet weld should be terminated for some time. As a fabricator years and years ago I was tought that a fillet weld should be stopped a weld size back from the end of the parts being joined. In the 2005 AISC spec there is a user note that say this is correct. I can't find anything in any AWS bood that tells me this. I am now working on a railroad bridge where the shop welded some stiffeners to the end of the part. I can't find in the D1.5 where this is wrong. Any advice.

RE: Fillet Weld Termination

See D1.5 2.8.1.7 and 2.8.1.8 depending on the application.

In regards to the latter, fillets on opposite sides of a common plane of contact shall be interrupted at a corner common to both welds.

Thank you for this information but what I am looking for is something about the termination of a weld when it is (for example) a lap weld and the fillet is continued all the way to the end of the two lapped parts.

RE: Fillet Weld Termination

Unfortunately, I don't think it's in D1.5 or AREMA.  My employer puts the requirement in their standard project specifications.

There is some commentary about this in D1.5-2008; check out the first full paragraph on page 361.

RE: Fillet Weld Termination

You may be thinking of a "hold-back" where the fillet weld terminates at a free edge of a tension member. Using AWS D1.1-2006 as the reference, look at figure 2.6 and clause 2.8.3.2.

Other editions of D1.1 list a similar requirement.

Best regards - Al
