We would like to change our plating supplier.  The components are mild steel and receive a zinc plate and passivate.  The potential new supplier uses a different process to the current supplier - although we are assured the parts will have the same level of corrosion protection.

Is there a simple comparative test we can perform in-house on samples coating by the two processes - without the need to go to a thrid party laboratory for a salt fog test?

How about periodic immersion in 3.5 % NaCl solution with ambient air dry?

If you can provide a good description of how the part will be used, environment, temp, etc, then I can give you a few things to try.  Also what do you have available to to assist in the testing, access to ovens, chemicals, labware, etc.

The plated metal forms the chassis of an electronic component.  The component must comply with MIL-STD 810G method 509.5 (salt fog).  We specify a temperature range of -30 to +60 Deg.C.

We have access to the tools and equipment typically found in a mechanical test lab.  We have access to ovens, common solvents, etc..

For a cheap and simple check if the parts not not too expensive; make a salt solution of water, partly cover the parts in a sealed container and put them in an over at 60 deg C for 48 hours (checking on them every few hours).  I would do this with both your current parts and the potential new ones and see how they react/compare.
