Table 1604.5 2006 IBC vs. Table 1.1 ASCE 7-05

Table 1604.5 2006 IBC vs. Table 1.1 ASCE 7-05

2006 IBC table 1604.5 notes "any other occupancy with an occupant load greater than 5,000" is an occupant category III. Table 1.1 in ASCE 7-05 does not have this requirement. Per section 102.4, it appears the 2006 IBC will control. Has anyone else sought clriafication for this from ASCE or ICC? Are they going to clean up this discrepancy in ASCE 7-10?

I'm not sure where else the Occ Categories from the IBC table are ever used within the IBC.  The IBC totally allows you to use ASCE 7 for the design loads so I would tend to go with that.

Also, in the IBC table, whether you excceed 300, or 5000, you are still in Category III.

I'm pretty sure I saw an article by Ghosh once in one of the trade magazines where he said to use table 1604.5 over ASCE 7-05 occupancy category table.  I need to look closer at the 300 vs 5000 clause, I would think large retail/warehouse could exclude the 300, but have the square footage to get to 5000 occupany as calc'd in the IBC.

In Virginia, the CPSM manual applies to state buildings. It states "Building Category from VUSBC Table 1604.5. Note: Do not use Table 1-1 in ASCE 7." This means use IBC not ASCE.

Check your state and local code amendments to the IBC.
