cold shearing 1141 steel

What effect does ambient temperature change (5F  to 40F range) have on cold shearing 1" 11/16 1141 steel bar stock? Specifically, can colder temperatures 5F create "spilt-ends" during shear?

RE: cold shearing 1141 steel

1141 is a terrible material to shear, and changing the temperature from 40 F to 5 F is likely to cause the type of cracks shown in the image.  What is the heat treat condition and microstructure of the bar?  Annealed?  Spheroidized?  Cold drawn?

RE: cold shearing 1141 steel

The steel is 1141V, hot rolled, air cooled. The micro structure is ferrite and pearlite.

thanks for your input,

RE: cold shearing 1141 steel

Unless this grade is specifically annealed to improve shearability, it will be prone to this type of cracking in the hot-rolled condition.  The microstructure will be quite inhomogeneous, with a large volume fraction of coarse pearlite, which is the source of the poor shearability, especially as the temperature is lowered.
