Induction motor axial misalignment forces
Induction motor axial misalignment forces
(OP)
How can one estimate the amount of axial force generated in relation to axial misalignment of rotor to stator? This is for a 1200Hp 2 pole squirrel cage induction motor. Is the raltionship linear or the square of the amount of misalignment?

The effect of vent ducts is generally to decrease magnetic centering force (can also create two magnetic centers).
Table 1 of EASA Tech note 15-4 lists calculated restoring force in pounds for 2-pole motors with no vent ducts. First columsn gives horsepower...2nd column is force when 0.05" off-center, 3rd column when 0.1" offcenter, 4th when 0.15" offcenter, 5th when 0.2" offcenter:
HP .05 .1 .15 .2 Restoring Force in Lbs
300 24 42 54 62
500 25 44 56 64
700 25 44 57 65
1000 31 55 73 85
1750 34 62 82 96
You can see even for the largest size moved 0.2 inches off center the restoring force is only 96 pounds.

I actually misstated the reason why 2-pole motors tend to have lower axial centering force....I think it has more to do with the core dimensions which tend to be smaller for 2-pole motor.

There is also an IEEE paper ... available to members of IEEE IAS for free... also available to others depending on your subscription:
