Hi

I have just started using Solid Edge and i need to make a bolt with a 3/8-16UNC thread and i am guessing that i need to use the Helical Protrusion to make the thread visable so i can put it into a drawing and be able to see the threads. So how do i make the threads??

That depends on if you want to have just a representation of the threads or the threads actually cut in the model. If you want a true representation then you need to use helical protrusion. If you just want to see hidden lines on the draft for your threads then go to the hole pulldown and you will see thread, you can use this for thread representation on a cylinder.

I need to have actual threads and so far i have gathered that the O.D. I should start with is .2984in and then from there i am lost i am not sure what the dimensions should be to make the thread that i need which is 3/8-16UNC

I don't know why you would ever need actual cut threads (helical) on a model. But you would have to get from machinary handbook the cross-section for that thread size and use that in a sketch to do a helical cutout down the length of the cylinder.

www.boltplanet.com (I think that's right) has a calculator that might help.  ASME B1.1 is I believe the relevant standard.

It is very unusual to need a true thread in a model or drawing, it takes relatively a lot of computer power etc. and can be a real pain in higher level assy's that get clunky with too many modeled threads in them.

Some vendors, such as mcmaster-carr, actually allow you to down load models of fasteners the carry, with threads modeled (approximately) if this is of help.

Why do you need the actual thread?
The helix is one of the worst things you can add to a model in almost every CAD system. The complexity of the faces just bloats the model for no real gain and will cause performance issues if you use them too much.
Just use the thread feature.
For actual thread details a simple google search will find loads of stuff.
