Hollow core copper used for 240kv transmission lines

(OP)
Looking for any info about hollow core copper conductors used as a 240kv transmission conductor. We seem to have one or maybe even two styles of hollow core conductor in our system and I am interested in learning more about them. One of the conductors has an outer stranded copper layer over a copper clad layer then has a I beam type of helex rolling thru the center of it. What should you use to splice out a damaged area, dead end it to a structure and what kinds of grips would one use on a this type of conductor? Another type that might also be in the system has a copper layer followed by hollow strands under that layer then has a reenforced stranded core like 795 Mallard. Any info anyone could provide would be great.

This subject came up a couple months ago on this forum and generated a lot of potentially useful information on types of hollow conductor.  Try a search.

Thanks, I checked out what had been discussed in the forum a few months ago. I wasn't able to get a lot of info but did find out that we should have changed this stuff out back during WWII like most others did.

Don't worry too much about it. If your local metal thieves figure out that this stuff is copper, they'll find a way to remove the old line for you. sad

Thought about that but unfortunatly the line crosses over a ton of other lines that were built after this one was installed. That is why changing it out got put off so long. They waited too long and now it's breaking down. I am afraid that even the metal thieves know enough to leave this one alone. I was hoping to see if anyone knew where or if splices were avaliable to patch up a bad spot (6-8' long)good enough until the line could be changed out after permits could be obtained.
