Sprocket & conveyor roller chain

Sprocket & conveyor roller chain

Sprocket & conveyor roller chain

(OP)
Greetings,
i have a wastewater screen equipment
which experiences jerking type motion
as it operates.

the equipment
a chain & sprocket type arrangement
with buckets attached to the chain link
attachments & a geared electric motor
operating at low speed of about
1.5 to 2.5 r.p.m drives the sprockets.

there are 2 drive sprockets with 16 teeth
each & the sprockets are 1 metre apart.
each sprocket has its own chain wrapped
around it with the buckets in the middle
fastened to the chain link attchments.

the chain wraps around the sprocket
& rolls around a guide rail at the other end.

the problem
as the equipment rotates it experiences
a jerking type motion.

the chains should rotate around the sprockets
smoothly but it doesn't.

like to know how i can rectify the problem.

could it be the large pitch of the chain
as it has a pitch of 200mm between the
chain rollers.

for instance the pitch on a bicycle chain
is small so as it roatets around the sprockets
the jerk is hardly noticeable.

Hi
You have basically answered your own question.
It is purely a function of chain pitch vs speed vs length of conveyor.
Mainly caused by the very slight change in chain height as the chain sprocket rotates through top dead centre and the internal clearances in the chain roller /bushes/links being taken up and relaxed.
The longer the conveyor, slower the speed, the worse the effect seems to be.
Also the smaller the sprocket the more of a problem it becomes.
Not much you can do and due to this application should not be any issues-on conveyors carrying loose product on pallets I have seen the product being displaced off the pallet due to the jerking/rocking motion that is set up.

Ross
