Telescoping Pipe Alignment Tool?

Telescoping Pipe Alignment Tool?

Telescoping Pipe Alignment Tool?

(OP)
Hi all,
I have a new application where I have 2 pipe segments that are meant to interlock at their ends one inside the other.  I need to align the 2 pipes relative to each other, with a separation distance of 5"-15", do some prep work on the ends and then slide them together.
I am in need of a tool that I can clamp on to either pipe, which will align them (giving me at least limited access to each end) and then telescope inwards so I can slide the pipes together without losing the alignment or adjusting the clamps until the pipes are fully engaged.  I've never heard of anything like this, but I would prefer not to have to design my own tool if someone is selling them off the shelf.  If anyone knows if a tool like this exists and can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it.
Thanks

Download the complete product catalogue you might find what you are looking for or something you can modify.

RE: Telescoping Pipe Alignment Tool?

Having no idea as to the work required on the pipe ends I'll still give it shot. Have you look at a weld prep device, one that centers in the pipe and machines the end to any number of configurations.
I think the  secret to what you require is to take the major weight off the alignment device which will allow an increase in the span.  If you are talking about try to hold and align two 1000 lb pieces of pipe this is a whole different story and lots of dollars

Modify one of this type clamp to fit.

If you have access to the ID this type of clamp can be easily modified.

There are quite a few of this variety around and they too can be modified.

I think that Mathey has a couple of clamps that I could easily modify to get exactly what I need and cut off a fair amount of time - I will be keeping that catalogue on reference for the future.  Thanks for all the help.

RE: Telescoping Pipe Alignment Tool?

As I posted above keep the weigh off the clamp to where all it have to do is move a little mass.  As an old timer I still like to call them Dearman, the original.

An old pipefitter once told me give me an acetylene torch, an 8# maul, and a Dearman Clamp and there was no telling what he do.

Good luck with your project.
