DC Hipot testing of 15kV cct with network transformers connected

DC Hipot testing of 15kV cct with network transformers connected

DC Hipot testing of 15kV cct with network transformers connected

(OP)
Does a transformer need to be cleared from a primary cct to allow dc hipot cable test or fault locating thumper equipment application to cct?  Will test characteristics simply be a bit different with transformer connected, ie. a bit more leakage current, than when testing cable only?
A network SCADA system is being installed on network system where I work.  Currently, all transformers are cleared from cct before any DC hipot test or fault locating with thumper is performed.  With the SCADA system, the network protectors can be blocked opened from the load dispatcher's office but the primary switch will still be closed.  Just wondering if testing and cable thumping can still be performed successfully and without damage to transformers.

Thanks

Should be disconnected, and should not DC hipot in service cables. I recommend you search this forum for some of the discussions that have been made on DC hipotting cables.

RE: DC Hipot testing of 15kV cct with network transformers connected

Cable fault locating with a thumper would probably damage a transfomer.  The historic DC test levels for cables are higher than those for a transformer; but as Zog stated DC hipot tests on in-service cables are no longer recommended.
