Ni-Cd/Ni-Mh charger for Li-ion batteries

Ni-Cd/Ni-Mh charger for Li-ion batteries

Ni-Cd/Ni-Mh charger for Li-ion batteries

(OP)
Hi all,
I'd appreciate some advice on the following: I recently ordered three Lithium-ion 9v rechargeable batteries (like the ones used in smoke detectors, active guitars and guitar pedal effects) from an online store. I also ordered a charger for them, from a different store, which turned out to be for Ni-Mh and Ni-Cd only (at least by specification). It also turns out that neither of those stores have a charger for this particular type (Li-ion, 9v) of batteries. What's worse, I couldn't find such a charger anywhere in my country! Ordering it from abroad would be ridiculously expensive.
I was wondering if I could use the Ni-Mh/Ni-Cd charger to charge my 9v Li-ion batteries, without running the risk of exploding or damaging anything, and if it would work at all.

Thanks in advance!

RE: Ni-Cd/Ni-Mh charger for Li-ion batteries

Li-Ion batteries are extremely finicky about everything.  I would not dream of charging Li-Ion with anything but a charger made to charge your specific battery.

This is exactly why you can't normally buy Li-Ion batteries in standard cell sizes - there would be too much carnage.

Thanks for your answer!
Unfortunately I couldn't find a specific charger for these batteries. I went to an analogy of Radio Shack in my country and they suggested an alternative: a charger with voltage auto-detect and choosable amperage, which I bought.
Can anyone please tell me what could be an optimal mAh charge setting for a 500mAh 9v Li-ion battery?
