Truss Design Calculations

Truss Design Calculations

Truss Design Calculations

(OP)
I am looking for a good example of how to figure all the member forces of a typical truss.  I know there are paid versions of computer programs out there that will do this for you but I want to know how to do it by hand.  Does anyone know of a place online where they give this kind of information?

Thanks,
Chris

RE: Truss Design Calculations

Look up "Maxwell Diagram" on your browser.  The method should be in some older structural texts too.

This looks good!  I looked into the Maxwell Diagram as well as your website desertfox.  Hopefully by looking at some worked examples, I will be able to figure this out.  When it comes right down to it, is it more economical to design a structure with trusses or perhaps Rafters or TJI Joists and Beams?  If you required scissor trusses, than maybe it would be better to use them instead of rafters.  Just something I was thinking about...

Hi Bedrock1977

So more worked examples on this site:-

As regards building structures I think it depends on what your structure is going to support.
There are various truss configurations but I always try to make the simplest structure I can and base it on triangles, it works for me anyway.

If you have a specific project in mind - you might want to call a local truss supplier.  They have all the tools needed top provide an effcient and safe design.

RE: Truss Design Calculations

I agree with Mike. Truss suppliers have the software which not only figures the forces (which is the easiest part), but applies the proper duration factors, repetitive member factor, wet service factors, etc. The programs also take into account lumber properties. A truss built with SYP will have different plate sizes than trusses built with SPF for example. The truss design dwg will show all the bracing requirements as well.
