Fig UW-13.3 (b)- Butt weld with hub

Fig UW-13.3 (b)- Butt weld with hub

Fig UW-13.3 (b)- Butt weld with hub

(OP)
I have a discussion with a manufacturer and my colleagues regarding the detail UW-13.3 (b)for butt wled connections:

Can the edge of the bevel of that weld be closer than "e" to the outer flat face?

And as I think that maybe is not too clear the question....I will try to explain in another way...Can the weld be "inserted" in the "resistant thickness "e"??

Thanks!

RE: Fig UW-13.3 (b)- Butt weld with hub

geodesia, from looking at the figure and Fig. UG-34(b-2), which I believe would govern the "r" dimension, my interpretation would be a qualified yes. The weld must be centered a distance of "r" from the "e" boundary. However, with ts up to 1 1/2 thick "r" only need be 3/8". This would seem to allow the weld bevel to encroach on the "e" thickness.

I'm not sure I would consider it a good practice, however.

Regards,

Mike

Thanks Mike
I agree with you that at least seem to be the logic thing to do!
But I am really surprised that the code "allows" that.
I havent found anything that contradicts that
Lets see if somebody find something
Mydea is that that detail are weld with hub, and if weld encroach on"e" thickness, you are not welding a hub, you are welding a flat side without hub, so do not comply with the figure.
