GRE pipe as a Caisson

GRE pipe as a Caisson

I want to use GRE pipe as replacement for existing 30" CS caisson for offshore application. Is GRE pipe can be used if there is an issue of scaling?

RE: GRE pipe as a Caisson

You're going to replace steel with fiberglass?

My initial thought would be to use steel, but with a better coating, assuming that a CS strength was initially selected with some thought toward actual material strength requirements.

Thank You BigInch,
Actually the purpose of replacing the open drain CS caisson is to avoid corrosion issue(less maintenance).I did some study and there is no issue on the strength and what not since it can withstand up to 34 bar. This application is only at atmospheric pressure.

RE: GRE pipe as a Caisson

I'm not sure what you're building.  A cassion like these things?

Hi BigInch,
The caisson application is to contain oily water before discharge to the sea.its part of the produce water treatment. Its not like something on the link.

RE: GRE pipe as a Caisson

Why would scaling be an issue - it will be on the inside? The GRP will have better corrosion and fatigue resistance than steel - it is a good option for the application.

Yes it would be inside scale build up.last time we experienced 10" CS pipe become 2" because of the scale build up inside the Pipe.

RE: GRE pipe as a Caisson

The GRP won't prevent scale build up but it might make removal easier.  The produced water hitting the seawater will still dump salts (trust that there are no regulatory discharge issues in this).  However, you are only using the caisson for flotation and skimming which should still work.

SJones,
Is there any impact on the GRE during descaling?and how is it easier for removal?

RE: GRE pipe as a Caisson

Yes GRE can be used as a caisson, go to Ameron Fiberglass pipe and in the marine section you will find case histories about using GRE
