Does anyone know of any exceptions to exceeding the height to least nominal dimension of a masonry column (which is limited to 25)?

RE: ACI 530-05 2.1.6.2

It seems no for columns. You can fake the effect with glued veneer tiles on a slender steel or concrete column (and a good detail). Yet remember the usual recommendation of not going over 30, say tests are based usually on tests of columns of up to such slenderness.
