Roller Loading as surcharge to bulkhead

Roller Loading as surcharge to bulkhead

Roller Loading as surcharge to bulkhead

(OP)
I am designing a sheet pile wall on a creek and I have one problem.  I am not sure what loading to apply as a surcharge on the surface behind the wall.  I believe that the construction loading will be the highest loads this site will see but I am not sure how to apply the load from a vibratory roller or large dozer since there seems to be no standard for such a loading.  So I was wondering if anybody had any ideas on how to estimate something like this.  The equipment will be a Cat Low Ground Pressure D-6 Blade and a Dynapac CA-25 vibratory roller.  Any comments would be helpful.  Thank you.

RE: Roller Loading as surcharge to bulkhead

Keep the heavy equipment back away from the wall at least half of the wall height and use smaller, walk-behind equipment closer to the wall.

RE: Roller Loading as surcharge to bulkhead

Where I have measured pressure against a non-yielding wall, I found that walk-behind compactors next to the wall can induce added pressure with each pass as deep  as 12 feet below that point.

Where the wall is designed for active pressures, not at-rest, we found that keeping walk-behind compactors 18", preferably 24", away (using sand backfill) that they do not do this cumulative  presume increase effect.

The uncompacted zone hangs up with the "silo effect", not causing surface settlement later.

Yes, keep the big iron back. Also, get a Caterpillar Performance Handbook. They are a great resource to have about their equipment.

Interesting comments from the Big Red's oldestguy.  You should think of putting together a memoir of your experience!  Good stuff.
