Recommend Mechanical Engineering Design Books

Recommend Mechanical Engineering Design Books

(OP)
Dear Experts,

I wish to buy a good engineering design book for use as reference.
Currently my workplace has the following:

•    Machine Design: An integrated approach by Norton.
•    Mechanical Engineering Design by Joseph Shigley.
•    27th Edition of Machinery's Handbook.
•    Mechanics of Materials by Hidgon and a few others

My favourite is Machine Design by Norton. Does anyone recommend a similar book that's on a par with this one? I don't really want to buy a book I already have access to.

Topics I look for are
Design for Static strength, fatigue strength, stress analysis, deflection and stiffness, design of mechanical elements like couplings, gears, bearings etc etc.

I'm looking for a general all round type of book and with an interactive CD would be cool 

Any information will be appreciated.

Best Regards
Eddie

RE: Recommend Mechanical Engineering Design Books

Mechanicanisms and Mechanical Devices Sourcebook - Sclater & Chironis
Engineering Formulas - Gieck

If you're doing welding at all:
Design of Weldments - Blodgett
Tubular Steel Structures - Troitsky

RE: Recommend Mechanical Engineering Design Books

I have found the following books to be good, updated references on machine design, fatigue, etc.:

Machine Elements - Life and Design by Klebanov, et al, (published in 2008 by CRC Press)
http://www.engnetbase.com/ejournals/books/book_summary/summary.asp?id=6088

Fatigue of Structures and Materials, 2nd edition by J. Schijve (published in 2009 by Springer)
http://www.springer.com/engineering/mechanical+eng/book/978-1-4020-6807-2

Both have a different "feel" than Shigley's book, so they likely would be complimentary, with reasonable overlap but not complete redundancy.

RE: Recommend Mechanical Engineering Design Books

thanks for the posts guys.. im taking my engineering classes now and i grabbed a few of these off amazon.. im excited about getting them! smile

RE: Recommend Mechanical Engineering Design Books

The following are a few additional texts that I find useful:

Roark's Formulas of Stress and Strain
Peterson's Stress Concentration Factors
An Introduction to the Design and Behavior of Bolted Joints (Bickford)
ASME Y14.5-1994 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
Mark's Handbook (available for free at asme.org if you're a member)
ASM Metal's Handbook

RE: Recommend Mechanical Engineering Design Books

Mechanical Engineering Design - Shigley
(my first copy fell apart I'd used it so much)

Roarks formulas for stress and strain

two books by JE Gordon are worth a read
Structures and the New Science of strong materials

Metals in the service of man (metalurgy)Alexander and street

but the internet is your best friend

cheers

RE: Recommend Mechanical Engineering Design Books

Hi,
Machine Elements in Mechanical Design, Robert L Mott
I used this alot covers a lot of things, I think shigley is better but i think sometimes having a simpler explanation in areas it makes it easier to understand and find more info later.
Good luck.

RE: Recommend Mechanical Engineering Design Books

Shigley's Engineering Design is great

RE: Recommend Mechanical Engineering Design Books

If you join ASME, you get online access to the ASME E-library.  It has about 70 online books, including Mark's.

RE: Recommend Mechanical Engineering Design Books

"•    Machine Design: An integrated approach by Norton.
•    Mechanical Engineering Design by Joseph Shigley."

Those 2 are very comparable.
The latter uses more vectoral notation.

RE: Recommend Mechanical Engineering Design Books

Something else to consider in machine design is the ways the machinery will fail once put in service.  They didn't teach it in school, but I recommend reviewing some of Heinz Bloch's books on machinery failure modes and troubleshooting for application on the user end.

"Machinery Failure Analysis and Troubleshooting" ISBN 0-87201-232-8

"Pump User's Handbook-Life Extension" ISBN 0-8247-4814-X

I like Shigley and Mischke's "Mechanical Engineering Design"  for a good review of design principles. Granted, I am not a design engineer but rather an industrial process support engineer with a background in the maintenance of mechanical equipment and system reliability.  Best of luck on your studies and future career path.
