(OP)
Hi everyone

I am trying to model a large timber beam (4800L 1600H 160B) with a small steel plate (30x120x160) attached to the end. Although the plate will initially be bonded to the surface, a load of 650kN is being applied. Because of this, it is expected that the plate will deform and detach at the edges, essentially meaning that not all of the plate will transfer the load to the beam.

We have only recently begun to use ANSYS, so no one here is really sure of how to connect these 2 elements. CONTA178 elements have been suggested, but I am still uncertain of how to correctly apply them.

Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
