Cooling Pond Performance -Methodology
Cooling Pond Performance -Methodology
(OP)
To all,
I am looking for a methodolology to calculate performance of a cooling pond at a steel mill.
I have inlet flow rates, inlet water temperature, pond area, depth etc. I need to know an expression for summer/winter performance and any other basic assumptions/information required to calculate outlet water temperature.
Does anyone have a spreadsheet or any other automated method ?
The pond is located in Northeren Illinois....
Thank You, in advance
MJC

RE: Cooling Pond Performance -Methodology
From the neat little (and free for the asking) "Burnham Heating Helper" - the BTU/hr loss per square foot of surface area. with delta-T between water and air:
10*F delta-T 105 BTU/hr per sq ft
15*F delta-T 158 BTU
20*F delta-T 210 BTU
25*F delta-T 263 BTU
30*F delta-T 368 BTU
This assumes a wind velocity of 3.5 MPH. For wind velocity of 5 MPH multiply BTUH by 1.25, for wind at 10 MPH, multipy by 2.00
I'm not sure that this is quite what you're looking for, but here it is for what it's worth. I'm willing to bet it's as accurate as any other way of calculating it.

Hi I had do a very similiar calculation. I based it on this reference on the net

plus a few basic heat transfer properties. Such as enthalpy in of incoming stream and outlet streams. While this assumes steady state and good mixing, it is a good place to start. This is a really good paper for modelling surface temperatures.
