A# for inconel in Section IX

A# for inconel in Section IX

A# for inconel in Section IX

(OP)
I am looking at using an existing PQR that was qualified with Inconel 625 filler, and writing a WPS for inconel 82 filler.  The only thing I see that might keep me from doing this is this essential variable for A#.  However, QW-404.5 states that it is only applicable to ferrous metals.  Neither, inconel 625 or inconel 82 fit a chemical composition given in QW-442.  I am assuming that Section IX does not count inconel as a ferrous metal (even though the iron content could be as high as 3% for inconel 82).  Could someone please confirm inconel is a non-ferrous metal as far as Section IX is concerned, and that the A# is not applicable for this case.

RE: A# for inconel in Section IX

There are many situations where things aren't spelled out in the Code just the way we'd like to see them, however, there's no reason to think that 625 or 82 filler would be considered as ferrous.  The definition of ferrous per ASM is a 'metal in which the principle component is iron'.  That certainly is not the case for the two consumables you refer to.  Indeed other Code sections such as UNF ( Non-Ferrous) in Sec VIII specifically list 625 and other non ferrous base metals.

RE: A# for inconel in Section IX

A No. is not applicable for Nickel base weld filler metals under ASME IX. F Nos. 41 thru 46 provide for weldability and chemistry type for the nickel base filler metals.
