Hello,

On a general basis, I would like to know if a vortex at the entrance of an horizontal pipe has more repercution than:
- Increasing the losses at the inlet
- Increasing the possibility of scour holes at the inlet
- Inducing turbulence into the pipe

The horizontal is of a diameter of 3' and is approx. 3' deep under the water level. The vortex is approx. 1' wide.

If there is a vortex at the entrance, yes the losses will be greater, since the losses are based upon the average velocity, which assumes a forward only turbulent flow.  With a vortex, there will a velocity profile that is greater at the edges than average and a hole in the middle which decreases effective the area.

To calculate this I use CFD or a scale model.

getting those local velocities, you can then answer the other questions
