Optimum distance between 2 pulleys

(OP)
hey all, got a questions:

there is a compressor driven by a engine, via a belt. the Compressor pulley sits a little lower than the engine pulley. ( i have this distance)

I have the pulley details of the engine and compressor. My question is, how do I locate the optimum pulley distance (horizontal, axis to axis) for the combined unit?
