Grade 8 bolt for code application

Grade 8 bolt for code application

Dear all,
Is there a way to use SAE Grade 8 bolts for ASME code applications? It seems SA354 Grade BD has comparable strength, but how do I re certify grade 8 bolts as SA354 Gr BD?
Thanks in advance for your help!

RE: Grade 8 bolt for code application

ME231;
The SA 354 specification for ASME Code application permits the use of any alloy steel as long as the requirements in Table 1, Hardness in Table 2 and Tensile requirements in Table 3 are met.

Certification per the above is described in Section 14 of SA 354. You will need to engage a reputable lab to perform the mechanical testing.

Thank you metengr for your quick comment. Is it too much wishful thinking, in your opinion, that bolt manufacturers could perhaps themselves sell us Grade 8 bolting certified as SA-354 or does tha vessel manufacturer usually have to do it himself?

RE: Grade 8 bolt for code application

Is the ASME Code in question a PV code or a piping code?

PV code - VIII-1 in particular

RE: Grade 8 bolt for code application

Is this a bolt for for a flange for an external connection, or a bolt for a flange integral to the vessel?

rmw, this is for an external connetion.

I think your answer is in this thread.

thread292-255131: ASME Sec VIII Vessel ultimate bolting selection

However, if it is piping that is attached to your vessel and the piping is under the jurisdiction of any code, that code might dictate what your bolting options are.

thank you, rmw, for pointing me towards the right direction. I guess sticking to the code always does help. the thread was quite enlightening.
