Nibral thruster into an aluminium tunnel

Nibral thruster into an aluminium tunnel

(OP)
Hello Guys,

Currently our company is engineering a Nibral (bronze)thruster into an aluminium (5083) tunnel. Both tunnel and thruster are located in sea water environment

We know that these materials have a large potential difference so we use a gasket to prevent corrosion of the aluminium. However, the thruster is bolted through the gasket to the tunnel. The bolts themselves are located inside the vessel and do not contact the seawater!

Do we need to isolate the steel bolts as well?

If so, we could use isolation bushes around the bolt shaft over a length of 40 mm. Will this prevent the corrosion caused by potentional difference through the bolt?

Our final option is to isolate the bolthead mounting surface as well, but then we require custom washers and we have doubt about the rigidity of the construction.

Thanks for the reply!

Greetz,

Oliebol
