A182 F904L flanges

Hi,

I'm having a problem and I'm hoping someone on the board can give me a hand.

I've got a client with a design which has a flanged item constructed of A182 904L for a B31.3 component.  I've looked through the allowables from App A and not found it and also Section II Part D with no luck.  After some research online I've found that it has a UNS of N08904.  This still isn't in B31.3 but I can find it Section II, Part D.  There is also a listing in B16.5 for B649 N08904.  I'm not sure how any of this relates as B649 is listed in B16.5 as a forging but as barstock in Section II Part D.

I was wondering if anyone had used this material before and where they went for allowable stresses and flange pressure ratings.  I'm getting a little confused.

Thanks.

reesh;
I would presume you are dealing with plate for the flanged item you mentioned above. The plate specification is ASME SB 625, which is referenced in ASME B16.5 for material group 3.11, and is also in ASME Section II, Part D, table 1B as SB 625 (plate, sheet, strip) for allowable stresses.

RE: A182 F904L flanges

By the way, there is no Grade F904L under SA 182.

Thanks metengr.

This is where my confusion is coming from.  I was looking at the forging for B649 in B16.5.

Also, I realize in Part D there is no F904L listed, but it is listed under SA-182 in Part A.

The people I am working with seem to be using the allowables and pressure ratings from B649 N08904.

I don't see it in Table 2 of SA 182 material specification. I see F20 (UNS N08020,
F58 (UNS N08367)

That's funny, I've got it here right under F62.  I'm using the 2007 Edition if that helps.

RE: A182 F904L flanges

Yes, I see the 2007 edition of SA 182 has 904L listed. Most likely, Section II has not caught up with posting allowable stresses for this material in Table 1B, Part D.

Here is what I would do - I would compare the stress lines for rounds in B649 and compare with the stress lines in B625 for plate. Whichever is lower, is what I would use until actual stress lines are posted for F904L under SA 182.

Thanks.  That's a good idea, it's pretty much the only option right now.
