Data Validation

Data Validation

Data Validation

(OP)
I use the Data Validation tool to insert lists. I love this tool in my templates as it allows picking and choosing vs. entering data. I have set up a spreadsheet of different data I use in my lists. Is there a way to use the data validation tools to make a pull down list referencing a different workbook/spreadsheet?

RE: Data Validation

Not that I am aware of . . .   at least not directly . . .

it is possible to link the list (data validation source) from other workbook into workbook/worksheet to the cell(s) with data validation.

i use range names for data validation; then again, this depends upon your usage.

hope this helps . . . good luck!!

RE: Data Validation

In the external document:
1) Create a Name for your "list" Range of data.
2) Create the Data Validation pointing to this Named Range(this will be temporary used cell).
3) Copy the Data Validation cell.

Switch to your working document
4) Select the Cell where you want the Data Validation to appear, then Paste.
-->Note that same "Name" can not also exist for a Data Range in this file.

Switch back to the external document:
5) Delete the (temporary) Data Validation cell (if you want).

FYI, now something will show up under the main Menu/Edit/Links, but I haven't figured out how to mange those links other then Break/Delete and re-insert.

Enjoy,
Ken
