Globe Valve body Repair by Welding

Globe Valve body Repair by Welding

Globe Valve body Repair by Welding

(OP)

A Globe Valve manufactured as per ASME 16.34 was found to have body casting defects. Excavation has been done to remove defects.About 10% of area of Body got excavated and one of the defects is 40% of thickness. My question is

1)Does the code allow to do repair by welding even though the defect/excavation in considerable area of valve body?

(I could not see any remark in the code since the code is silent in this part)

RE: Globe Valve body Repair by Welding

athilatt;
Yes, weld repair is permitted for Standard Class valve castings by virtue of the material specification referenced in Table 1 of ASME B16.34. If you know the material specification of the valve casting, this will provide guidance as to type of defect removal and weld repair along with associated requirements.

Also, for Special Class valves, defect removal and weld repair are directly addressed in B16.34 (See Section 8).

RE: Globe Valve body Repair by Welding

Code is only minimum requirement (not for any specific application)...

You should consider in detail for repair procedure and inspection work...

If this valve is in critical application, you may not allow for major repair...
