AWS d1.1 section 4 ,table 4.1 ,I need to qualify a wps for making a single bevel joint in a tube section ,no backing bar welded from 1 side,I work with ASME IX more than AWS ,from table 4.1 it appears we would have to weld the coupon used for mech. testing in position . ASME IX does not require any particular position when making weld samples to qualify a WPS,am I reading table 4.1 correct that I would have to make the sample joint in the 6g position to qualify the WPS for all postions ,I can understand position being a esential var.  for a welder performance test but not to qualify a WPS. my understanding of wps qualification testing verify's the joints ability to perform up to the base metal standards.

RE: wps /pqr

Under AWS D1.1, both the welding procedure and the welder must be qualified for full penetration welds made from one side without backing. Per ASME IX, only the welder need be so qualified.

RE: wps /pqr

bhart,

This is one of the major differences between the two codes.  You are reading the table correctly.
