Extract Region in NX7

Extract Region in NX7

Extract Region in NX7

(OP)
Just started on NX7 after 4 years on NX3. When attempting to Extract Region, after selecting my seed and boundry faces with "Traverse Interior Edges"and "Hide Original" selected, when I 'ok' the operation it leaves me with nothing more than my seed face. What could I be doing wrong? I've never had this issue in NX3. Is there a setting that needs to be changed? Thanks in advance.

Without seeing your model, it will be hard to comment on what the problem might be.

the model is just a primative block...when I do a region extract, I only get the seed face.

RE: Extract Region in NX7

If you're really trying this with a simple Block primitive then the only face that you're going to get is the 'seed face' as the 'boundary' faces are NOT included in the final set, rather they simply define the BOUNDARY of the 'region'.

Try this...

Add a Boss feature to the top of the block and then a small Blend around the top edge of the Boss.  Now perform the Extract Region selecting any of one of the 3 faces which makes up the Boss as the 'seed face' and then select the faces around the sides of the Block as the 'boundary' and then hit OK.

I've also had this same issue with real world parts. I know how to use the operator, it was my bread and butter. I had the same issue in NX5 for the few weeks I got to play with it.

RE: Extract Region in NX7

It appears to be working, in NX 7.0, exactly as I would expect it to, with the simple example I described.  How do you think it should work?

Like it did in NX2 and 3.

RE: Extract Region in NX7

I'm just not seeing any difference except for the look of the dialogs. If you could show us ANY pair of parts that work differently with the same selection then I might be able to fathom what your problem is but for the moment testing with John's example and simple hollowed cube isn't shedding any light on the subject. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help.

RE: Extract Region in NX7

I have to agree with Hudson, the only real difference between NX 3.0 and NX 7.0 is the presentation of the dialog options and the selection behavior.  And even if we take Dialog Memory out of the equation, NX 7.0 allows you to perform my simple example with only 6 keystrokes whereas NX 3.0 required at least 7 and for most people, who use MB2 as the default action, 8 keystrokes, so it would seem that since the desire is for fewer mouse gestures, we've actually gained ground making the interaction more efficient.

RE: Extract Region in NX7

We moved from NX2 to NX6, I use extract region quite a bit and I saw no difference in the behavior (I have not tried it on NX7 yet).

In the simple block example if you pick one face for the seed and the opposite face for the boundary, you should end up with 5 faces in the extract region.

Perhaps the 'Use tangent edge angle' option was checked by mistake? If you turn that on with the default 45 degree value and run my simple example you will end up with only the seed face instead of the 5 faces.

RE: Extract Region in NX7

Ok, I just built the simple model you mentioned and extract worked flawlessly. I do still have the issue though with an extracted data jt file. (properties>jt file>extract exact data). I also get the same issue extracting from a parasolid. We are now working mainly with jt files and I need the extract to quickly remove "B" surfaces from parts.

Suggestions?

RE: Extract Region in NX7

AS I originally stated, without seeing the actual parts, it will be hard to make an suggestions.

Are the "B" surfaces excluded from the region, or are you implying that extracting the surfaces changes the underlying surface type?
