HV protection concept

HV protection concept

(OP)
Dear All.
Are someone have expirience with French utilities?
I was involved in projects in the country, that operated according to French standards and I have couple of common Q's about standard and concepts.
Could you please help me?
1. Transformer protection for Xfr 90kV 45MVA
What is requeremnts: two 87T protection( both include 50/51), one 87T and one 50/51?
2. Are must used LOR , if yes one for DC1 and one for DC2?
3. Are must used test-plug?

4. Are must used busbar protection?
5. Are possible use one protection for BBP and for BFP?
6. Are must used LOR for BBP?

Best Regards.
Slava

RE: HV protection concept

Hi Slavag,
Our french TSO ( RTE) do not use differential protection for transformers.
what is LOR?
test plug is most likely required.
BBP is also required.

Note that protection relay to be used shall be autorize by RTE ( autorisation d'emploi).
What is BFP?

Regards

RE: HV protection concept

ZapSib,

LOR = lockout relay, ANSI code 86.
BFP = breaker fail protection. I'm unsure of the ANSI code for BFP.

Do you know why do the French utilities not implement differential protection for their transformers?

Hi ZapSib.
Thanks a lot for your answers.

I will used for this project only AREVA relays, Micom series.

LOR-lock out relay with mechanical or elrctrical reset ( for example RADE of CEE).

BFP-breaker failure protection, part of utilities is request a independenr relay, part used it as part of main 1 or main 2 protective relay, part is approve used mix BBP and BFP in one box, for example Micom P740 (741, 742).

Best Regards.

Oh, Scotty was first smile)).

As I remember, Scotty you do projects for ME, in the ME LOR is MUST, in the US and Canada is must too.

For Xfr's from 5-10MVA, we always install diff protection.

RE: HV protection concept

I remember French used to provide transformer protection by monitoring tank current.Tank will be insulated from ground at rollers. Tank earth will go through a CT which will act incase of an earth fault in transformer.Tap changer drive panel, oil pumps and cooling fans also will be isolated as any earthing in their supplies will trip the transformer.

RE: HV protection concept

slavaq, if you project is for Lebanon tank protection as prc described it is also required.

It may be like this in theory and practice, but in real life it is completely different.

RE: HV protection concept

G'Day.
For HV transformer, there is special protection relay (PTP = protection de transformateur primaire) including all required protections ( masse cuve, tap changer, oil temp and so on ..)

I am not 100% sure, but I belive that RTE is still using old philosophies and still avoid 87T due to old reasons ( no interposing CT ...)

50 BF ( bkr failure) is required and may be part of the BBP.

Rgds.

Thanks a lot guys.
It's very helpful.
I will back with additional Q's smile about line protection, it's intresting sub-transmission voltage 90kV.
Best Regards.

lz5pl . project in the central Africa

RE: HV protection concept

Slavag,
where in Africa?
some utilities stick more or less of RTE philosophies.
87T may be use/required in some place.

Hi ZapSib.
Im found manual of PTP8000 only in French, but is good enough, pict and technical words more or less same.
OK, I see is possible use for this porposes Micom P632 in the 19" box.
What is a TPN, TSA, are grounding transformers? Becouse buholltz trip connect from those trefos too.

Thanks in advance.
Best Regards.

RE: HV protection concept

priviet slavag,
TPN is rougly a grounding transfo.
TSA is for auxilliaries services.

I will go for 87T relay for SEEG. ( company for electricity & water of Gabon).
Rgds.

Privet ZapSib!!!!

Thanks a lot again.
Maybe you can help me with next additional Q about SEEG...please.

What is a standard protection concept for sub-transmission lines 90kV
Are used 87L, line diff protection?
Are used 67N and 67 protection?
What is a concept for command between substations: optical, etc...?

Sorry for disturb, my main contractor don't have some connection person in SEEG yet, I would like build concept of protection before his meeting in Gabon.

Best Regards.

Dear ZapSib!!!
Thanks a lot. I found lot of usefull information on this site.
No problem, in end of the project, maybe, I will speak French.
Merci!!!

RE: HV protection concept

Slavag, Since TPN and TSA are mentioned, let me share another feature of power systems with French influence eg Syria. They use 220/66 kV star/delta trfs and for stepping down use again 66/20 kV star /delta transformers. Both on 66 and 20 Kv sending end bus they use grounding transformers with a secondary for station lighting.zigag/star11 transformers with secondary rating of 0.4 Kv 250-100 kVA

Thanks a lot, PRC.
According to my data, in this project will be similar configuration.

Best Regards.
