Need NX3 on Laptop with intent to go to NX6 soon

Need NX3 on Laptop with intent to go to NX6 soon

Need NX3 on Laptop with intent to go to NX6 soon

(OP)
Hi all. Newbie here. I am purchasing NX this coming week due to a sudden business opportunity. Have been using for 6 years now. The work I have lined up has to be done on NX3, but I want to  install NX6 as well. Doing so on a laptop would be ideal as I will be working at home as well as on site. Can someone let me know if this will work ok and what system specs I need. Also, will NX6 and NX3 work on Windows7 or will I be better off on XP? Sorry for the long question, but I can't seem to find this info anywhere.
Thanks.
Adam

RE: Need NX3 on Laptop with intent to go to NX6 soon

There's no problem having multiple versions of NX on the same laptop as I have the following versions installed and running on my laptop:

UG V16.0
UG V17.0
UG V18.0
NX 1.0
NX 2.0
NX 3.0
NX 4.0
NX 5.0
NX 6.0
NX 7.0
NX 7.5

The only special consideration that will need to take into account in order to run both older (pre-NX 4.0) and newer (NX 5.0 and later) versions simultaneously is that you will need to have two license servers installed and running, one using an older NX 4.0 or older license sheet and one using an NX 6.0 or newer license sheet.  Now there's no problem setting this as they use different 'ports', but you will have to have your system configured this way to run both NX 3.0 and NX 6.0.

As for System 7, NX 6.0 has been certified to run on System 7, and while NX 3.0 has not been certified (and won't be officially), it will probably run OK (after all UG V16.0 was never certified for XP and it runs fine on my Windows XP configured laptop).

Thanks John. I think I get what you are saying. What about actual hardware specs for a laptop? I look at the system specs requirements (on the Siemans website) and it only seems to list the specifics for desktop configurations. I just don't want to end up with a laptop that can't handle the job. Ram, Graphics, Processor...etc.

Thanks so much for your reply.

RE: Need NX3 on Laptop with intent to go to NX6 soon

I'm running a 3 year old Dell M65 (I should be getting a new machine later this spring when we refresh some more of our hardware) running Windows XP32 with 2GB memory (we did upgrade the hard-drive to 300GB from the original 80GB a year or so ago).  This configuration has been more than adequate for my needs, but I am looking forward to getting something a little faster, with more memory and better graphics, probably a Dell M4400 (a Dell M6400 would be nice but it's a bit of a brick at 8.5+ lbs).

Alright. Here is what I am looking at:

Dell M6400 T9900 Intel Core2 Duo 3GHZ
Windows XP 32 Bit
4G Ram
Nvidia Quadro FX 3700M

Now. I am not that computer savvy. Will 32 Bit work just fine for NX3 and 6 and 7 for that matter?

On this system, I can only go up to 4 Gigs of RAM, unless I want to go with the 64 bit. That is my main concern. How much better off would I be on a 64. Also, the 64 bit specs for Dell's graphics cards don't seem to match the system requirements on Siemans configurator.

Thanks again.

Sorry, forgot to mention, the m6400 is not even available in 64 bit.
Pulling my hair out. Siemans says I need a m6300 for 64 bit but that is not offered anymore on Dell's website.

RE: Need NX3 on Laptop with intent to go to NX6 soon

Hexfly, check again because I'm looking at the Dell website recommending an M6400 with Window 7 64 Bit at no extra cost.

Ok..I see it. I was on the one on the right... I am still confused however. On the Siemans Software certification page it is showing nothing for NX on Windows 7 that is certified that I can see.

Also. Can I run NX3 (which is 32 bit right?) on a 64 bit OS. XP or 7? It seems like I am better off  using XP no matter if 32 or 64.

The bottom line is that I need to start off on NX3 because right now, it is a customer requirement. They are going to NX6 soon however so obviously, I need to be able to make the jump whenever they are ready. I would probably load both anyhow.

I appreciate all the help you guys are giving me. I have yet to speak with anyone from Siemans. I have a guy at Dell actually trying to get some info out of them.

I would love to order the above system, but on 64 Bit XP or windows7. I really don't care which one. I just need it to work for NX3 and 6. I understand that it (NX3) is no longer certified for anything 64 bit, but will it work?

Sorry for dragging this out...I just want to make sure I order the best system for my needs.

Again, thanks for all your help.

Sorry, but the part that is frustrating is that on Siemans software Certification, they are not listing the M6400 as certified unless in 32 bit.

I have to believe that this computer would work in 64 bit with the same graphics card. nVidia Quadro FX 3700M

RE: Need NX3 on Laptop with intent to go to NX6 soon

Please help!
My configuration:
New workstation Lenovo S20, Quadro FX1800
OS Win 7 (64bit)
UGS NX3

First NX3 installation worked. (modelling , drafting, ass....). There were some  problems with customer defaults settings - different colours, different path to proper file etc. and I couldn't  plot.
NX3 was installed on directory: c:/program files (x86)/ UGS/   and I noticed that problems appeared due to different path as default. Normally path is c:/program files / UGS
So I uninstalled NX3 and installed it again.
Result: Nx3 doesn't work.
There is a message:
THE GRAPHICS WINDOW HAS DETECTED AN ERROR AND IS NOT ABLE TO INITIALIZE

and next message
GENERAL FAULT EXCEPTION

Does somebody know what has happened between first and second installation?

Thanks in advance
Luka

RE: Need NX3 on Laptop with intent to go to NX6 soon

It looks like you are installing the 32-bit version of NX3 on a 64-bit OS. While this does work, you need to reinstall it again, leaving it in the default folder, c:\program files (x86)/ugs. This is where 32-bit executables get loaded on a 64-bit OS.

When you upgrade beyond NX4, you can get 64-bit NX by contacting your CSR and requesting 64-bit distribution.

RE: Need NX3 on Laptop with intent to go to NX6 soon

I'd add that under Windows 7 64bit there was the promise of 32bit applications being run under an XP/32bit emulator. I'm yet to see how that works for NX-3 but I'm betting that it makes a difference.

RE: Need NX3 on Laptop with intent to go to NX6 soon

I'm reinstalling  the 32-bit NX3 on 64-bit Win7 again. I'm leaving it in the default folder, c:\program files (x86)\ugs. After the installation everything seems to be ok. Few seconds after starting the NX there is a message

The Graphics Window has detected an error and is not able to initialize.

and It still doesn't work. The best thing is that  32-bit NX3  worked on 64-bit Win7 after first installation yesterday.

RE: Need NX3 on Laptop with intent to go to NX6 soon

I have seen this error recently. The issue was with a space ball/ mouse driver. The hint was in the NX log file which started to produce errors at the point where 3dconnection libraries were loaded.

RE: Need NX3 on Laptop with intent to go to NX6 soon

Actually when I saw this it tweaked something in my distant memory about graphics drivers on 64bit systems, but Ben seemed to have it covered so I let it be. Maybe it is the spaceware driver and it just turns out that all such driver errors approximate one another. I'd also be interested to hear back as to the resolution for this.
