how to convert Solidworks 2009 files to Solidworks 2008 files?

RE: backward compatability in Solidworks V9 to V8

You can't.

RE: backward compatability in Solidworks V9 to V8

Just one more reason to hate Marketing people.

What you can do is export it from 2009 as parasolid and import it in 2008. It will be a dumb solid but you can use it, measure it, add fetures etc.

RE: backward compatability in Solidworks V9 to V8

If you have FeatureWorks you can take it a step further and recognize those features and you then have a part with all features in the previous version.

Also MikeHalloran please do not think this is a marketing ploy.  There is not any 3D modeling system I know of that is backward compatible.  It is like saying that GM should of planned the 1980 Monte Carlo so they could put the next generation engine in that did not yet exist.  There is no way to prepare for the unknown.  That being said I am sure I will be proved wrong.  I do know there are a couple systems that have masked the above process to make it seem to save back but it simply exports the file, eliminates new functionality and recognizes features and then saves the part.

A nice little one click "Mask" if you will however this leaves no control to the user.  If something is not properly recognized you have no way to make a change.  I like the idea of exporting and then having the choice how and what features are recognized if I do need to take a file backwards.

RE: backward compatability in Solidworks V9 to V8

Christmas comes early!!!!  I was really hoping for yet another discussion on backward compatibility!!!!

Thank you Santa, where ever you are...

RE: backward compatability in Solidworks V9 to V8

dgowans,

It comes up often.  It is a common expectation when coming from a 2D basic line CAD system.  I assume these are new users that have expectations that different technology was able to provide.  Most likely new to the forum as well.  It is just as easy to respond as point to another lengthy post that is half dataless complaining as opposed to useful information.

RE: backward compatability in Solidworks V9 to V8

And just in time for Christmas we have HOPE!  I recall seeing a video of SWX World 2009 with Jeff Ray hosting a countdown of the top ten user requested items they were working on.  I believe the ability to save a file down a level was the number one item.

Now for the realist in me. . . The list was the top ten of "user requested" items and not necessarily their top ten committments.  Also, I have heard nothing of this since seeing that video, including no mention during the rollout of 2010 that it was even in the works.

sldwkmin,

I'm quite aware of the fact that this topic comes up often.  You may be correct that it's easier to respond than it is to point what are undoubtedly new users / members of eng-tips to a prior thread, but it's also quite easy for these same people to search the forum.  Said search will quickly find threads that conclusively state that a native conversion to a prior release isn't possible as well as threads that provide the usual workarounds.

This forum is valuable because of the signal-to-noise ratio; ad nauseum discussions about the same topics don't contribute.

That being said, "Happy Holidays"!!!!!!!!!!

Typing "faq559-1345" and hitting the submit button took me about 6 seconds, and has the added benefit of making members aware that an FAQ section exists.

That doesn't mean it is impossible. I used to espouse the same, but have come to believe that version incompatibility IS a marketing ploy used by all the major CAD players. The technology to create version compatibility does exist ... the will to do so, doesn't.

If a new empty/dummy part is created in SW2009 and then opened and saved with SW2010 without making any changes, that part cannot be opened in SW2009 even though there are no sketches or features to interpret or translate. You will not be able to convince me that the program coding has changed so drastically that even a basic template cannot be 'converted' backwards.

RE: backward compatability in Solidworks V9 to V8

I know you can download different versions for a part in 3dcontentcentral.  Has anyone tried that?  Upload in say 2009 and then dl it in 2008?

RE: backward compatability in Solidworks V9 to V8

I just tried with a simple part uploaded from SW2010. Then downloaded as SW2008 ... it came in as an Imported body. So 3DCC just converts to parasolid.
