Hi,
we need to determine the asphalt content by ignition method. We got a sample mixed by the plant per design and also we got an aggregate sample+binder separately. To determine ACF (aggregate correction  factor), we have to determine the mass loss of aggregate during burning process, which requires to mix the aggregate and binder per design and burn it in the oven. I was thinking to burn just the aggregate without the binder to determine the mass loss of aggregate. In this way I think some of the error generated by the loss of binder stuck to the mixing pan will be eliminated. Am I overlooking something? We have an Troxler NTO oven. Thanks.

Do the mixing and the burn-out in the same pan. Then you eliminate almost all sources of error. The binder has an ash content also.

There are ovens made for this...difficult to do properly without one.

Never expected to hear about this process.   

Or to have expected to hear about answers and specifications (or ovens, or pans) needed to fix problems with a process I didn't know existed.   8<)

Always mix the oil in then do the burn to get the CF. We have special baskets to contain the burn sample. We also hold the sample for a good hour at mixing temp (to allow for absorption) before burning. I'm not not sure how crucial it is to burn the mixing bowl and spoon if you're just obtaining the CF.

Maybe a dumb question.  Is their a lab procedure you must follow?  If so, shouldn't the answer be found there?
