Hazardous Location???

Hazardous Location???

Hazardous Location???

(OP)
I have been asked to put in an emergency stop or disconnect switch on a 120v 1 hp pump motor that dispenses deisel fuel from a 300 gallon tank. The motor itself is UL listed for Hazardous Locations, and there is a manual motor starter built right into the pump for making and braking the power to the motor. This fuel tank and pump are located outside. We basically use this to fill up forktrucks and other mobile equipment. Looking at the existing wiring, nothing is explosion proof. Being that this is outdoors, how would we classify this?

RE: Hazardous Location???

Outdoors?   Interesting.  I'd think you need a Class 1 Div 2 categorization for the area, as hazardous materials are not regularly present.  Unless being outdoors means you have "adequate ventilation" to be unclassified; but what about on a non-windy day?

Is diesel fuel classified as a hazardous material?

NFPA70 Article 500 is probably a good spot to start looking for answers.

RE: Hazardous Location???

Diesel fuel is not considered a Class I substance.  It's not volatile enough.  No hazardous location classification is needed if this dispensing area is only dispensing diesel.

Gasoline is another story.
